Verhaal van TERRA - Een bezoek aan de Tono-regio, prefectuur Gifu


Tono, in the south eastern area of Gifu Prefecture, is a historic pottery region and the largest producing area of porcelain and ceramics in Japan. Techniques have been developed and passed down through generations, and pottery is an important part of the culture here.

KINTO’s TERRA collection is also produced in Tono. We have started working with a new partner in this region who can bring out the rich texture of red clay and the nuanced glaze expressions that give this collection its character. Read on to find out more about the process.

Molding
Bowls and plates are made using a method called "power forming." Soil is poured into a plaster mold, the inside is shaped with an iron plate called a trowel, and a semi-automatic potter's wheel is turned. By manually adjusting and shaping the pottery, we have achieved a stable form and just the right thickness.

Finishing the Rim
The craftsmen smooth down sharp edges using their hands and tanned leather. It is a delicate process that requires an experienced and steady hand.

Attaching the Handles
The TERRA grill dish is oven-proof, and the shape of the handles have been designed so that it can be held easily even with an oven mitt. Craftsmen attach each handle carefully, using a liquid clay called “dobe”.

The mug handles are formed by attaching thin strips of clay. It is because the curvature and edges are formed by hand that the mug is so comfortable to hold.

Logo Stamping
The logo is hand-stamped on the bottom, adding an authentic feel to each piece.

Drying and Bisque Firing
The greenware is dried on a wooden shelf before being bisque fired at 600℃ for about 5 hours. By drying out the water completely, it ensures the glaze can adhere to the surface.

Glazing
The bisque-fired products are dipped into glaze with special tongs. It is a practiced and precise movement to apply the glaze at the desirable thickness. Expert craftsmanship is the key to TERRA’s expressive glaze.

Final Firing
Finally, the products are glaze fired for about 15 hours at 1230°C. The kiln is controlled very carefully, taking into consideration weather conditions such as temperature and humidity.
