Subtle details that foster lasting attachment
CAST was designed by the late Kosei Shirotani. He once shared with the KINTO team, "There is something like an intangible 'spirit' that attracts people to objects, which is imbued by human handiwork or the fine finishing touches of proportions."
A dignified presence shaped by functional beauty—such qualities naturally nurture a lasting attachment to objects we continue to use over time. In this article, we introduce the design of CAST, which reflects Shirotani’s philosophy.

Uninterfering design
The concept of “uninterfering design” emerged from viewing actions such as drinking or pouring as secondary gestures within everyday moments—reading a book, enjoying a conversation, or savoring a meal.
The word CAST refers to assigning roles. True to its name, each item in the collection is given its own role and designed to fulfill the conditions required for that purpose. To determine the optimal proportions for each use, numerous experiments were repeated. The collection offers a diverse lineup, allowing items to be selected according to different scenes and styles.

For seamless movement
Each item is designed with care to support the body's natural movements during quiet, unhurried moments. The rim of the cup spans slightly outward, so that with only a light touch of the lips, the drink flows smoothly toward the mouth. By tilting the rim slightly outward across a width of about 5–7 mm, the design allows the right amount of liquid to flow at a comfortable pace.
The handles of cups and jugs are designed to sit comfortably in the hand, with careful attention to grip position, the point of force when lifting, and the pull of gravity—three elements held in quiet balance.
Made of heat-resistant glass, CAST items can be used in the microwave and are suitable for both hot and cold drinks. Lightweight and refined in appearance, they are also dishwasher safe, making them well-suited for everyday use.
It may not be obvious, but there is an undeniable appeal and charm. I believe this fosters our enduring affection for items which we enjoy over time.
Kosei Shirotani Product Designer
From 1991, worked in architecture and design offices in Milan. In 2002, returned to Japan and opened STUDIO SHIROTANI in Unzen City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Alongside his own design practice, he was deeply engaged in collaborative projects with university students and artisans from traditional craft regions across Kyushu. He passed away in December 2020. For KINTO, he designed collections such as CAST, RIM, and LEAVES TO TEA.
